Profile Statement
When I became a nurse, in 1995, I quickly realized that at the core of nursing is teaching. Teaching is a daily part of my practice. I teach patients how to treat their current health problems and how to be proactive in preventing further problems. I teach nursing students, new graduates, and new employees about current nursing policies and procedures of patient care. I also teach my coworkers—nursing, medical and ancillary staff members—best practice procedures. All of which are backed by research, documented information on how health or performance is improved by using tested and proven procedures, leading to more efficient behavior, more effective care, and more overall health and well being.
Today as I reflect on my nursing career and my transformation to a nursing faculty member I realize that I have always been motivated to teach. For as long as I have been a nurse, I have been a dance instructor and cheerleading coach. Understanding the fundamentals of a procedure or process, explaining those fundamentals, setting goals, and supporting individuals in realizing those goals are guidelines by which I coach and teach. Educating, assisting, and empowering others to reach their highest potential has been a passion of mine for over twenty years.
Transforming my career in nursing to that of a nurse educator couples both my nature for caring for others and my passion to teach. As a nursing educator, I will become of greater service to the profession of nursing by educating future generations of nurses. My dedication and passion for both nursing and education will enable me become a successful member of the academic community. Please view the information presented on the following pages as examples of my work and experiences as a nurse and a nurse educator.
